ELI Vacancy for Secretary General now open

The European Law Institute (ELI) vacancy for the position of Secretary General is now open. The Secretary General, who will be involved in all aspects of the ELI and its work, will be responsible for the co-ordination of the ELI Secretariat located in Vienna and hosted by the University of Vienna, but is expected to travel to Brussels and other places where required. He/she will work closely with the ELI Executive Committee and will be involved in its strategic decisions with the aim of further strengthening the ELI’s position in the international and European legal landscape. The Secretary General will also be in charge of enhancing the ELI’s network, establishing contacts with other institutions, fundraising, negotiating with individuals who are leading or might be leading ELI projects, and raising awareness of the ELI and its work. Not only should the Secretary General fulfil representative functions in collaboration with the Executive Committee, but also take the initiative in providing ideas for the future direction of the ELI. The Secretary General will also be in constant contact with other ELI bodies, such as the Council and Senate, and will ensure that the decisions taken by the ELI bodies are duly implemented.

Another relevant task of the Secretary General will be the coordination of the Secretariat team, ensuring the effective fulfilment of the Secretariat’s functions—such as membership, finances, and event and communication management—and coherency in the work of the team, especially in terms of the public perception of the Secretariat and thus the ELI. The Secretary General will offer other support to the ELI Executive Committee, Council and Senate, and will manage other day-to-day activities.

The Secretary General post requires a high degree of responsibility and personal initiative to further strengthen the position of the ELI and to establish it as a well-known brand in European legal development. The Secretary General is responsible for taking the lead in numerous decisions affecting the direction of the Secretariat and consequently the Institute itself.

The profile requires:

  • Professional experience in law, either in practice or in academia, on an international level; if possible, experience in dealing with EU-institutions
  • Strong organisational and communicational skills
  • An engaging and collaborative personality and an ability to represent the organisation to the public, individual members and stakeholders
  • Personal initiative and leadership skills
  • High level of motivation and a capacity for teamwork
  • Fluency in English both written and spoken
  • Fluency in at least one other European language (German language skills are not required but will be an asset for interacting with local institutions)
